Start with what you touch
Towels and the bath rug do more for how a bathroom feels than paint does, and they take an afternoon rather than a weekend.
Saturday morning: textiles
Replace towels as a set so the colors match, and wash them before first use. Add a rug sized to the vanity, not the room.
Saturday afternoon: storage
Get the counter clear. An over-the-toilet shelf or an under-sink organizer usually buys back enough space to make the room read as tidy.
Sunday: the finishing layer
A tray for the things that live on the counter, a mirror or small frame, and a light source that is not the ceiling fixture.
What not to bother with
Matching every accessory to the same set. Two or three coordinated pieces read as intentional; six read as a display.
Sunday: the finishing layer
Once the textiles and the counter are sorted, the room needs very little. A mirror, one plant or candle, and a hook where the towel actually gets hung rather than where it looked tidy in the plan.
Before you order
- Measure the vanity width before buying a rug. A rug wider than the vanity reads as a runner in the wrong place.
- Count the towel bars you actually have. A six piece set in a bathroom with one bar means five of them live in a cupboard.
- Check the door clearance. Bath rugs are thicker than they look, and a door that catches is a daily irritation.
