Go up before you go out
Most small rooms have three or four feet of unused vertical space above eye level. A tall narrow shelf takes less floor than a low wide one and holds more.
Make furniture do two jobs
A storage ottoman is seating plus a place for blankets. A bench at the entry holds shoes underneath. In a room under 120 square feet, single-purpose furniture is a luxury.
The closet rule
If you have not used it in a year and it is not seasonal or sentimental, it is renting space at your rent. Clearing one shelf usually beats buying another organizer.
Contain the small things
Loose items read as clutter no matter how tidy they are. Bins turn twenty things into one thing visually.
Contain, do not stack
Loose items expand to fill whatever surface they are near. Bins and baskets set a hard edge, and the edge is what makes a small room read as tidy rather than full. Matching bins on an open shelf do more visually than closed doors, because the eye stops counting objects.
Before you order
- Measure the height between shelves, not just the width. Bins are sold on footprint, and height is what fails.
- Leave one shelf empty. Storage filled to capacity on day one is storage you stop using by week three.
- Check the weight rating before books or files go on a tall narrow unit.
